About Nathan

Nathan Gerbe is a former professional ice hockey forward with extensive experience at the collegiate, professional, and international levels. He developed as a young player through Honeybaked Hockey and the USA Hockey National Team Development Program.

Nathan played collegiate hockey at Boston College, where he was a key contributor to the 2008 NCAA National Championship team. Following college, he went on to compete in the NHL, playing for the Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, and Columbus Blue Jackets. He also gained international experience playing in Switzerland’s top professional league with Genève-Servette HC, expanding his understanding of the game from a global perspective.

Following his playing career, Gerbe transitioned into player development and currently serves as a Player Development Coach with the Nashville Predators, working closely with athletes to support their skill growth, habits, and long-term development.

Nathan is a dedicated family man who enjoys spending time coaching and supporting his four young children, all of whom play hockey for local Detroit-area teams. Being actively involved in youth hockey as a parent and coach gives Nathan a firsthand understanding of the developmental journey young athletes and families experience.

This perspective helps shape his approach at Gerbe Elite Performance—balancing high standards and elite expectations with age-appropriate development, encouragement, and a genuine love for the game.

Assessment

The assessment phase is a personalized starting point designed to set each player up for meaningful development and success. During the initial meeting, Nathan conducts a detailed review of the player’s game film alongside a one-on-one conversation to better understand the athlete’s goals, strengths, and areas for growth. This collaborative session allows Nathan and the player to identify key focus areas and begin building a clear, structured plan tailored to the player’s needs. By combining video analysis with intentional goal setting, the assessment establishes a strong foundation and direction for ongoing development within Gerbe Hockey Lab.

Development

The development phase is built around consistent, targeted video review sessions that help players elevate their game with purpose. Nathan works closely with each athlete to break down key aspects of their performance, using video to highlight strengths, identify growth areas, and reinforce habits that translate to game situations. A major focus of these sessions is helping players develop a clear identity and role within their unique skill set, allowing them to play with confidence and intention. The frequency of video review sessions is tailored to the package selected, ensuring each player receives the right level of support and progression throughout their development journey.

Beyond structured sessions, players also benefit from ongoing mentorship and direct access to Nathan. Athletes can reach out through phone calls or texting for guidance, feedback, or support in real time, whether it’s after a game, during the season, or when navigating challenges. This open line of communication helps build trust, reinforces accountability, and ensures players feel supported every step of the way as they continue to grow both on and off the ice.

On-Ice

The on-ice training component brings development directly onto the ice through focused individual or small group sessions led by Nathan. These sessions are designed to translate off-ice learning and video insights into real-time execution, with an emphasis on targeted skills, decision-making, and game-specific habits. Nathan works closely with each player to reinforce their identified goals, refine technique, and build confidence in competitive scenarios. Whether in a one-on-one setting or a small group environment, each session is intentional, high-tempo, and tailored to maximize player growth and performance.
